The shape and contours of a person’s chin contribute significantly to their overall facial appearance. Well-defined chin contours that create a distinct divide between a person’s face and their neck are considered particularly attractive. However, small fat pads under the chin can reduce the definition of these contours and create a double chin, significantly altering a person’s facial features both in portrait and in profile. These unwanted changes can be corrected through treatment for a double chin. We use different techniques to perform these optimisations depending on how pronounced a person’s double chin is.

We would be happy to arrange a personal consultation here at the prevention-center in Zug to discuss the options open to you, outline the benefits of each method and advise which would be most suitable for you.

FAQs about double chin removal

A double chin happens when small fat deposits develop under a person’s chin. The clue is in the name: it looks just like a second chin.

There are many potential causes of a double chin. It often occurs when a person is overweight. In addition, the risk of a double chin increases with age, as fat pads become harder to work down and the skin loses its elasticity. Genetic predisposition is also a factor and can lead to young people developing a double chin even though they are a normal weight.

There are certain risk factors that make a double chin more likely. The most significant factor is a person’s weight. Excess weight appears in different places – including, in many cases, a double chin. Keeping an eye on your weight can significantly reduce the risk of a double chin. Following a healthy lifestyle (in terms of diet and exercise) and a good skincare regime can have a positive impact on typical signs of ageing. However, we can only reduce or slow the ageing process; it is not possible to halt it completely.

It depends on the causes of the double chin. If it was caused by weight gain, it can usually be remedied through weight loss. However, if a double chin develops due to genetic predisposition, and occurs despite a person being a normal weight, treatment (such as liposuction or a neck lift) is usually the only way to eliminate unwanted fat pads.

There are various methods available to treat a double chin, including hyaluronic acid fillers, injection lipolysis, liposuction and a neck lift. Exactly which method is most suitable in your case depends on the specific cause and shape of double chin. The treatment procedure varies depending on method used:

Hyaluronic acid fillers

A slight double chin can be treated with targeted hyaluronic acid fillers. This minimally invasive method allows us to define the chin contours more clearly and compensate for minor imperfections and asymmetries.

Injection lipolysis

Injection lipolysis (also known as fat-dissolving injections) uses special substances, injected directly into the fat pads under the chin. This method is a gentle alternative to surgical fat removal (liposuction) but is only suitable for treating small fat pads.

Liposuction

Conventional liposuction is usually required to treat larger fat pads. In liposuction, a substance is injected to loosen the fat cells before they are removed using a cannula. This treatment is performed under local or general anaesthetic.

Neck lift

When a person has a very pronounced double chin, a liposuction procedure will leave behind excess skin. Removing this excess skin and achieving aesthetic results requires a neck lift. In this procedure, which is carried out under general anaesthetic, we surgically remove the skin (and, if necessary, more fat tissue).

Minimally invasive treatments like hyaluronic acid fillers are very gentle procedures and do not entail any kind of surgical or anaesthetic risk. However, these treatments cannot achieve long-lasting results. Instead, permanent results require surgical treatments such as injection lipolysis, liposuction or a neck lift. As with any operation, potential side effects of these procedures can result in secondary haemorrhages, wound healing disorders, infections and sensory disturbances.

In addition, treatment for a double chin can cause slight swelling and redness and leave small bruises or a temporary feeling of numbness in the treated area. However, such symptoms usually subside completely within a few days.

As a fundamental rule, we recommend soothing any swelling by gently cooling the treated area. Make sure to rest for a few days after the treatment, avoid exercise and other physical exertion for the first few days. You should also avoid exposing the area to direct sunlight and do not visit the sauna or solarium. It is also important that you follow the aftercare instructions you received at the prevention-center in Zug (such as wearing a chin bandage or compression mask). It is vital that you attend your check-up appointments at our clinic in Zug so that we can monitor the healing process.

How long the results last depends on the method used. The results of hyaluronic acid fillers will fade over time as the body breaks down the injected hyaluronan. However, regular refresher treatments at the prevention-center in Zug can help to maintain the results for longer.

The results of injection lipolysis, liposuction and neck lifts are usually permanent. Nevertheless, these treatments do not stop the natural ageing process, so a patient’s skin and chin may continue to change as time goes by. Of course, it would then be possible to arrange a further correction with us at the prevention-center in Zug.
